A Graduation Speech Stirs Controversy: Religious Expression and School Protocol at Campbell County High School

During a pivotal moment at Campbell County High School’s graduation ceremony, Micah Price, a graduating senior, took a stand on his beliefs that led to unexpected consequences. Selected by his principal to speak, Price was given guidelines for his speech, which included a brief mention of his faith. However, Price extended this mention into a fuller expression of his Christian faith, diverging from the pre-approved script by urging his classmates to find God and embrace Christian teachings.
This deviation from the script led to the withholding of his diploma, a decision that the school defended as a necessary measure to maintain the integrity of the ceremony and respect for all attendees’ diverse beliefs. Superintendent Shelli Wilson explained that while the school respects religious expressions, it was crucial to adhere to the pre-planned program to avoid setting a precedent for unscripted alterations.
In his own words, shared in a TikTok video, Price acknowledged his breach of the school’s code but defended his actions as driven by his deep faith: “I am in the wrong technically, because I went against Campbell County code, the rules,” Price admitted, adding, “my lord and savior is your answer he will give you the truth, the way and the life.”
Despite recognizing his error, Price’s story prompted a mix of support and criticism, leading to threats against school leaders—a response Price strongly discouraged. Advocating for a peaceful approach, he quoted scripture to emphasize that true Christian behavior must be rooted in love: “Anyone that’s taking a hateful route to this I please ask just you know, take a chill pill, take a time out because in John 1, it talks about how it is absolutely impossible to say you’re a Christian if you don’t love your brother or your neighbor,” he stated.
